Ah, welcome to New York state, where it gets fucking freezing. A few words of advice from an old hand:
1) There are three things you need to survive. Good quality winter boots, a decent coat and a hat. And those should be bought here - Australian (and English, for that matter) gear just doesn't cut it. A nice long scarf is also good, since you can wrap it around your head when needed
2) LAYERS. Wear several layers and strip them off as you need to once you're inside. We all look like Michelin Men when it's cold so don't worry about it. ;)
3) Beware nice bright days. Sure it looks warm since the sun's out, but those are the coldest. Wind chill is also a bastard, so pay attention to the weather app. Also, snow is fun and all, but it's also wet when it melts. And slush SUCKS.
4) The mansion's really well appointed, but it's still an old building and there are drafts. Ugg boots are awesome. Wear a jumper inside if you're not going to be in your room.
I know I will. I’ve already started layering like Ms Sefton said. It’s just odd. I’d normally be in shorts and a singlet about now back home and looking for the nearest Dam to swim in.
